The Chief Underwriting Officer for Markel Specialty reports to the President of Markel Specialty.
This role leads and directs the overall underwriting strategy, operations and policy development across our product lines of Markel Specialty.
This role owns the delegation of underwriting authority for Specialty in partnership with Markel's Chief Underwriting Officer.
Position Responsibilities Key member of the Specialty Leadership Team(MSLT)effectively representing the product perspective and partnering / influencing across multiple distribution channels to ensure informed and balanced decision making Promote, cultivate, grow and develop a strategic road map for profitable underwriting while collaborating with MSLT on distribution strategies.
Oversight of the Markel Surety line of business Leadership of Specialty EUO (Executive Underwriting Officers) Collaborate with Markel's Corporate Underwriting leaders and organization Lead policies, guidelines, product development and data quality innovation initiatives Deploy internal and external resources to provide tools for analysis, risk mitigation and customer value added services to assure business plan coordination and corporate appetite Collaborate with MSLT and regional underwriting executives and managers to develop talent and ensure internal talent mobility Research competitors and market conditions; identify emerging industry trends and risks in order to develop and maintain risk selection criteria Deploy internal and external resources to provide tools for analysis, risk mitigation and customer value added services to assure pricing consistency and corporate appetite Align on strategic direction with Actuarial and own communication and implementation throughout the PLL organization Champion and manage strong, productive and profitable agency/broker/account relationships Embrace the need for data and analytics and how to leverage them to make Markel successful Understand and remain up to date with the current and emerging implications of AI and incorporate into future underwriting strategies and planning for Markel Specialty Continuously search for novel ways to achieve superior results and monitor and appropriately change course Leadership responsibility for the Product Management Review process Qualifications Bachelor's Degree Requires 15
years of insurance underwriting and leadership experience with exposure to and understanding of actuarial function Demonstrated experience leading and developing large teams Strong relationship building and collaboration skills Excellent strategic skills with proven ability to think long term and lead transformational change Demonstrated experience working with and influencing key stakeholders and leaders Must be willing to travel up to 50% of the time Experience managing a P&L Strong understanding of expense management approaches along with success in utilizing metrics to lead and direct high performing teams and external partners Outstanding communication skills, both written and verbal to diverse audiences The base salary offered for the successful candidate will be based on compensable factors such as job-relevant education, job-relevant experience, training, demonstrated competencies,geographic location, and other factors.
The (National) base salary range for the Chief Underwriting Specialty position is $325k - $425k/year.
